Project Origin Gets the "F.E.A.R." Name

The true sequel to F.E.A.R. now has the name it so desperately wanted...and needed.
Originally titled Project Origin (a title chosen by fans), the direct sequel to the original hit F.E.A.R. has been re-titled F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin. Almost three years after the original scared the pants off of PC gamers around the world, Monolith Studios and its publisher WB Games have secured the rights to the F.E.A.R. name. With no numbers or deal specifics being revealed, what caused the sudden change in heart?
Well, it probably wasn't a change of heart as much as it was Sierra, the game's publisher, being dissolved by its new owner Activision Blizzard. For some strange reason, Monolith retained the intellectual property of F.E.A.R. but Sierra owned the actual title of F.E.A.R. As a result, Monolith's sequel could not be called F.E.A.R. 2, even though it's a direct sequel with the same characters and plot line, since the sequel had a new publisher.
With Sierra now a dead name and its IP either shelved or brought into the Activision Blizzard collective fold, another F.E.A.R. follow up from them seems unlikely. As bitter as the split between Monolith and Sierra was (and the name rights fight that followed), Sierra can only sit and watch as the naming rights change hands.
With the new name secured, F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin should ease some confusion amongst fans and consumers while giving the anticipated title a much needed shot in arm regarding expected sales. The game was recently pushed back from an intended release date of October to February 10, 2009 and will be available for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
